Awsworth 5K run

The madness continues with another run signed up for, this time the Awsworth 5K run supporting Mencap. Being woefully unprepared having smashed my iPhone into oblivion a few days before, I borrowed a friends iPod but horrified to discover it had the Twilight soundtrack on it. I’m supposed to run to this? Even more of a concern was that I hadn’t washed my run kit. I’ll be the one smelling of Febreeze at the start line looking and smelling a little sheepish then. It did have a kind of whiffy quality to it.

Signing my life away, I fill in the next of kin sheet and complete in the medical questionnaire. I don’t suppose I could put verruca down as a medical condition even though its true and right on the ball of my foot. I collect my race number (40) and don my ‘I’m in Mencap’s Dennis the Menace’s Team’ race vest over my kit. Then its time for a warm up. My Zumba warm up was laughably embarrassing, like an uncoordinated minstrel dancing. My first attempt at Zumba nearly took 4 people out.

Then we’re off and out the starting gate, lots of villagers watching with a great atmosphere. Its all tarmac this route around Awsworth village, along a busy road, up a hill, down and then with extreme cruelty, the last 3/4 mile is a steep hill to the finish. I didn’t see one person not walk that hill partly at least once. Its over the line with a chip time finish of 34:41. I’m happy with that, my fastest race yet (only my 2nd). A second and final medal around my neck.
